These individual pieces were laser-cut to exacting tolerances, then assembled by hand in order to create this piece. Curly Maple occurs when the heartwood of the hard Maple is highly figured. The hard Maple is a cold-climate tree, and grows abundantly in the northeastern United States, Middle Atlantic States, and throughout the Great Lakes region, as well as in areas of eastern Canada. The heartwood is reddish in color, varying from light to dark reddish-brown. The growth rings produce a very fine brown line throughout the wood. The grain of hard maple is tight with a fine texture. This razor handle is handcrafted by Robert Quinn from separate pieces of dyed Box Elder and natural American Holly and arranged to depict the traditional Barber’s Pole. These individual pieces were laser-cut to exacting tolerances then assembled by hand in order to create this piece.The modern Barber’s Pole originated in the day when blood-letting was one of the principal duties of the barbering trade. The two spiral ribbons painted around the pole represented two long bandages, one twisted around the arm before bleeding (to make the vein stand out), and the other used to bind it afterwards. The first European poles contained only red and white stripes and some historians credit the blue stripe on the American poles as having been transported from blue and white bands on English poles of the 1700’s. Other authorities say that American barbers added the blue stripe to their red and white poles as a patriotic gesture.

Most Teak is a rich, golden brown in color, but also may vary from rich brown to a deep, chocolate brown with dark, almost black, markings. The grain may be either straight or wavy, with conspicuous growth rings. Teak most often is used in ship building and decking. Since it is acid resistant, it is used in laboratories as bench tops and chemical vats. It is also used in furniture and cabinet making and in garden furniture.

This handcrafted handle was made by Robert Quinn from Buckeye burl that grows in the central states of the US. The botanical name for the Buckeye is Aesculus, from “Aesculapius,” the name of the mythological Greek god of medicine. The common name “Buckeye” was derived from the Native Americans who noticed that the glossy, chestnut-brown seeds with the lighter circular “eye” looked very similar to the eye of a buck (male) deer. Some believe that the buckeye relieves rheumatism pain and provides good fortune when carried in the pockets of their garments or worn as an amulet around the neck. Instantly dubbed “buckeye” in frontier speech, the mysterious nut was used as a general cure-all for generations. As a result, citizens of Ohio became known as “Buckeyes.” The buckeye tree was officially adapted as the state tree on October 2, 1953. This handle features a contrasting fiery red resin to make this visually stunning piece.
